In this article I’d like to focus on particular statements made by these three gentlemen concerning the possible detection of human decomposition smells, or the lack thereof.
We will begin by looking at Richard Creque’s interview with OCSO. Richard is described by others as the “human cadaver dog”. He had worked for the medical examiner’s office on removals of bodies involved in homicides and is very attuned to the smell of decomposition. He was a team leader for a TES search on Suburban “around the 5th or 6th” of September, 2008. He recalls there were about 15 searchers that day. He describes Suburban Drive has being “saturated”.
Richard believes it was the 6th of September when he was back in the area of Suburban Drive, and was walking west on Suburban away from the school, that he smelled decomposition about the time he reached “that little apex bend” in Suburban Drive. Richard’s statement that he detected something is backed up by another gentlemen present at the search that day by the name of Brett Reilly. Brett states Richard mentioned to him when he detected the smell that affected him.
The following map gives the approximate location of Caylee’s remains along with the general area of the “apex bend” in Suburban. As noted on the map, the wind that day was blowing out of the southwest. As can be seen on the map, if Mr. Creque is highly sensitive to the particular smell of human decomposition, it is well within reason he could have “picked up” on the smell of Caylee’s remains. Mr. Creque had a slight advantage over the search dogs present on Suburban Drive on September 1, 2008, due to the difference in wind direction on the two days, as will be shown in a moment.

Now we’ll look at Joseph Jordan’s account of the activity involving the search dogs on September 1, 2008. There seems to be a discrepancy between Joseph Jordan’s statements about where the dogs were used on that day compared to what Danny Ibison states about where Tyler, his search dog, was deployed. Joe Jordan provided a map with the “findings” of certain items on September 1, 2008, to OCSO. The map below is a crop of that annotated map showing where Joseph Jordan states a blanket, and some type of cooler was found in the water just to the south of Suburban Drive. I have overlayed a red line on Joe’s line to make it more clear where he is denoting he found those items. Joe says that both dogs present at the search that day were deployed to around the findings at that spot until they were up to their bellies in water. He states they were only in the water a couple of minutes before being pulled out.

Danny Ibison states he does not believe Tyler was deployed to the finding of the cooler and blanket. He states Tyler remained in the truck at that time because Danny had him resting from the work that had been done previously.
While the discrepancy in the two men’s accounts of whether the dogs were deployed to around the cooler is ever rectified or not, I don’t believe it will make much difference in the state’s presentation against any defense that Caylee’s body was not there on September 1, 2008. The location where Joe has denoted the finding, and claims the dogs went into the water for a couple of minutes is in excess of 50 feet, and may be closer to a 100 feet northeast of the location of Caylee’s remains. And as can be seen in the following map, the wind was blowing at 9 mph directly away from the location the dogs may have been deployed.

Assuming that the smell Richard Creque detected on September 6th, 2008 was, in fact, Caylee’s remains, I believe the wind direction is the key factor in why Richard Creque was able to detect the smell on that date, but the search dogs (assuming they were deployed at the location denoted by Joseph Jordan) did not on September 1st, 2008.
Valhall.
