Commentor Steffiee had a great suggestion that we look at the expert witnesses on the state’s witness list. The revised state’s witness list can be viewed here at It’s a Mystery to Me. The first person of interest on the list, concerning potential forensic testimony, is Michael Burnett, Ph.D. of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Dr. Burnett is the chemist who was referenced in the air analysis results of the trunk as having performed an analysis on BlueStar to ensure its components had not contributed to the chemicals detected in the air testing. BlueStar is a latent bloodstain reagent used by law enforcement to detect blood at crime scenes. The report states that Mr. Burnett’s work showed that BlueStar did not contribute to the chemical signature detected.
Dr. Burnett is a co-recipient of an “R&D 100 Award” for his work on the Block II Chemical Biological Mass Spectrometer. This is the first “integrated instrument capable of detecting and identifying both chemical warfare agents and biological warfare agents”. Dr. Burnett is also a co-writer of the Oak Ridge Thermal Ellipsoid Plot (ORTEP), which is a computer program that can create illustrations of crystalline structures in a ball and stick format. He has also co-written the Modular Chemical Descriptor Language (MCDL) which assists in producing linear representations of structural and chemical information. Dr. Burnett has co-authored a paper on utilizing the MCDL in prostate cancer chemotherapy.
Dr. Burnett is also a co-author of a tutorial on Crystallographic Topology utilizing ORTEP. He has also co-authored a paper on Heegaard Splitting of Critical Nets on Orbifolds. He is listed as a co-author on two papers related to odor analysis of decomposing bodies: Odor Analysis of Decomposing Buried Human Remains and Decompositional Odor Analysis Database.
