Latent print on crime scene item? – Answer is: no

Posted on November 10th, 2009 by Valhall

There still seems to be some confusion here, so I have opted to change the title to clarify that my question asked has been answered in the negative. The pump the latents were taken from, which appears to be what was being referenced in the Activity and communication log quoted below, was taken from the Anthony home for the purposes of attempting to get latents or other evidence that could prove or disprove a “Zenaida”. Therefore, the item was not at the “crime scene” (i.e. dump site of Caylee’s remains). It was at what is most likely the real crime scene (the Anthony home).

Hope that clarifies this.

My friend, JWG, from Websleuths, has pointed out that he believes the Activity and Communication log from this latest document dump (page 450, link below) is referring to the pump on the inflatable bed when it states:

OCSO did lift latent prints & then finished proc’ing them so items will not be submitted for LPU as previously discussed.

After having this pointed out to me and re-reading the statement on the log, I tend to believe he is correct. So I wanted to update this to make sure I don’t spread more confusion.

It appears OCSO may have lifted a latent print (or more) from one or more of the items found at the crime scene. On page 450 of the uber-document we have an Activity and Communication Log concerning evidence to be received and processed in by the FBI on March 5th that states:

OCSO did lift latent prints & then finished proc’ing them so items will not be submitted for LPU as previously discussed.

When we look at the list of evidence processed in at the FBI lab on March 5th (page 451) we find the following items:

Q297-Q298 – swabs from bottom of gas container #1
Q299-Q300 – swabs from interior of oil pan
Q301-Q302 – swabs from bottom of gas container #2
Q303 – swab from clean wipes pack in backpack
Q304 – swab from comb handle in backpack
Q305-Q306 – swabs from pump of inflatable bed
Q307-Q308 – swabs from male portion of cord from flat iron (hair straightener)
Q309 – stone piece from crime scene
Q310 – piece of fabric from crime scene
Q311-Q313 – pieces of fabric from crime scene
Q314 – piece of fabric from crime scene
Q315-Q315.2 – pieces of fabric from crime scene
Q316-Q317 – pieces of tape from crime scene (non-Henkel duct tape)
Q318 – piece of tape from crime scene (non-Henkel duct tape)

Of course the latent prints wouldn’t come from any of the swabs, so we are left with the fairly good assumption that a print or prints were lifted from one or more of the items Q309 to Q318 retrieved from the crime scene.

It will be interesting to see who this print(s) belongs to.

Valhall.

Good Morning Valhall……Thank you for this education! I believe that the State has the ” smoking gun” with the latent print. Time will tell, and time is flying. It’s interesting that everyone in the circle has been excluded, except Casey, and if the State knows that the print belong to some one else other than Casey, then maybe their stance would differ. With all the overwhelming evidence,be it circumstantial or direct,it’s baffling that her Defense team will not throw in the towel and save her from the possibility of the Death Penalty.

I’m not sure we have seen any fingerprint analysis results of this referenced latent. At this point, it could be anyone (including a transient, I guess).

It’s my understanding under the “Sunshine law”that the State does not have to turn all evidence over, maybe the latent will be the icing on the cake. God I hope so,HLN just made a comment on the chloroform find, and showed Casey’s clip of her flipping the finger to her father, she is purely pathetic.

Thanks for this listing Valhall

One thing discovery to date has been missing are results of latent print processing … along with many document pages … I suppose these are the types of things that the defense could keep sealed? I mean if they were very damaging to the defense of KC …

Thanks for the info Valhall. I was really excited to see the new Bill Sheaffer blog today. Between the two of you I’ll be able to understand every single aspect of this case. Justice for Caylee.

Val,

Two prints were lifted from the inflatable bed pump.

Awesome, JWG! Can you please give a page reference for us?

And thank you!

Wow. Valhall. What a wonderful site! You make everything so clear that even the most complex becomes easier to understand, and I am most grateful to you for that. Your dedication is commendable; and if I might ask you, where do you ever find the time to keep up with it all, and do you take copious notes? After so many thousands of pages I have a tendancy to forget past evidences, such as the “inflatable bed pump”? I don’t recall that, but it’s obviously of major interest due to the latents. And so JWG, if you could please, indeed, give a page reference, it would be so greatly appreciated.

I find it so rather interesting that neither George nor Cindy gave so much as a passing thought to the gnats and flies that had infiltrated that trunk. Had they, either one of them might well have reached for their can of Raid, and zapped those little bug-gers right off the bat. Just goes to show you that they aren’t as astute as they oftentimes present themselves to be. Imagine, keeping the car so wide open in order to dissipate the odor, removing those smelling slacks and a whole lot of other items, only to so completely ignore such a crucial piece of evidence as the bugs! I’d dare say they feel so rather foolish, right about now, and perhaps just a tad bit afraid.

I can also well imagine that the one is blaming the other.

Cindy: “Why didn’t you do something about the flies and maggots, George! You’re the cop!”
George: “What the H – - – are you talking about! You sent me back to work, remember! You said you’d take care of it! But you didn’t did you! If Casey fries it will be all your fault!”
Cindy: “My fault! You’re the %@&^@#^@% cop who should have known the flies were feeding off the decomp!”
George: “There you go again, Cindy! It was pizza, remember! Pizza! And you call me a dumb s—!”

Heck. Maybe it’s time I took a little cruise, huh?

Ha! Willow, you’re cracking me up!

Thank you for the kind words. I think the problem with the bugs is that they weren’t in the car trunk anymore. They flew out when the trunk door got opened at the impound lot and then the larvae that was still in the trash bag went with it!

Yeah, I’m trying to figure out where the latents on the inflatable bed are mentioned. I haven’t seem them mentioned in this dump, but maybe I’m reading it over it. 1700 pages makes that easy to do! If it was in an early evidence release from OCSO, then that might be where I’m missing it. Hopefully JWG will pop in and give us a discovery reference page.

:0) Valhall, you are a wonder of wonders, indeed! Darn. No live swarming gnats for Cindy to have swatted at, and considered a nuisance? Now doesn’t that just burst my bubble! I mean, they couldn’t have (the gnats) been yet attracted to the pungent odor of decomp emminating from the car while it was parked, open and exposed, in the Anthony’s garage, and for lack of a (God I hate the mere thought) fresh or later decomp impetus, swarmed about Cindy’s head anyway, could they?

But on a more serious note — and for the most part I will be most serious, as this is a most seriously devastating matter — having only skimmed the 1700 pages, it’s time I go back and devour, in search of latents, that most probably will NOT be revealed until trial, or immediately before. I am convinced that not all items have, as yet, been tested, for the sole purpose of the State’s ability to hold back from the defense until the very last minute. So long as an item hasn’t been tested, the defense has no claim to the results. I believe there’s almost always one thing more. Latents or blood, or both. Something. What say you, O wise and wonderous Val?

Well, for one thing, I say I’m not that wise and wonderous! I’m an archiver…that I’m good at. And writing technical papers in a manner that people can understand.

I do hope to God they have more. I hope there is much more.

Hey Val,

All I have is page 3233 from the January 21, 2009 document release.

Hope that is enough. If not, happy to email you the docs.

P.S. – speaking of the hope there is more. Do note that the scientists will write only strict, factual observations down on paper. Opinions and theories have been communicated verbally. With that secondary line of non-discoverable information, I have no doubt that LDB has been able to weave a very tight noose around the neck of Ms. KC.

Oh! Okay, JWG – That page you directed me to, in this pdf

http://www.cfnews13.com/uploadedFiles/evidence%20reports.pdf

It is about the 18 latents lifted off the items from the Anthony home. I see what you’re saying. And I tend to believe you are correct.

Thank you very much! I will make a correction on my blog so that I don’t spread more confusion!

» JWG said: { Nov 10, 2009 - 09:11:10 }

Yeah, sorry I cannot provide a web link. I download the PDFs and then blow them out into individual reports, giving them my own number schemes and filing the metadata into a spreadsheet. Good for my own cross-referencing, but it does not help the general population much.

JWG,

Don’t apologize. You gave me the information I needed to find it and you helped me get off a goose chase!

Birdman,

I think we’re all (and I refer to all the internet communities out there looking at and discussing the discovery) trying to get to the facts. And no matter what site it is, we’re all going to get off some times. This particular entry is evidence for that. 12,000 pages of evidence will do it to you!
