PRAISE GOD AND PASS THE BABY BOTTLE – SHANNON DEDRICK FOUND ALIVE!

Posted on November 5th, 2009 by Valhall

Little baby Shannon Dedrick has been found alive.  She was found in a box under the bed at the babysitter’s home.

http://www.nwfdailynews.com/news/alive-22289-baby-chipley.html

Washington County Sheriff Bobby Haddock (my newest hero) stated:  “I’ll never forget that time as long as I live” in reference to the moment he presented a living, breathing Shannon Dedrick in a press conference.    He presented Shannon to the media by stating “We ARE the proud papas of a little girl.  This IS Shannon Lea Dedrick.” Sheriff Haddock did not make it through the conference without showing his tears of relief and happiness.  I didn’t either.  Link to press conference video…

Kudos to the awesome Washington County Sheriff’s department for bringing this little angel back to us alive.

Valhall.

P.S.  Thank you Danna for sharing the good news!

Sheriff’s deputies have been reported to be at the home of Shannon Dedrick’s babysitter, Susan Baker.  Susan Baker’s niece has confirmed that Susan is the same woman who was previously implicated in the disappearance of her own stepson in 1987.  The boy has never been found.

Sheriff’s deputies were seen blocking the driveway into the home which sits a distance off the road and is not visible from the roadway.

The babysitter of missing infant Shannon Dedrick is reported to be under investigation concerning a potential involvement in the child’s disappearance. The babysitter, Susan Baker, has given an interview to a local newspaper since the story broke. In that interview she claims she had warned the governor, in a letter she wrote this past August, that Shannon “could be in danger”. However, WHJG, channel 7 has revealed that the babysitter and her husband may be the same Susan and James Baker extradited back to South Carolina 9 years ago in connection with the 1987 disappearance of their then 3-year-old son. The child has never been found. The South Carolina Susan Baker was later convicted of abusing the couple’s 6 year old daughter. Police state they have become aware of the babysitter’s potential background and are investigating.

A missing child alert has been issued for a 7 month old little girl named Shannon Lea Dedrick. Shannon is believed to have disappeared from her bed sometime between 3 a.m. and 11 a.m. Saturday morning.  Shannon’s family lives in Chipley, FL in the Florida panhandle.

In a press conference Sunday Washington County Sheriff Bobby Haddock that nothing at the present makes them think the baby was abducted, but added that the infant “didn’t crawl or walk away.”

There are reports that the mother allegedly confessed to killing the baby and burying her in the woods near a landfill.
But authorities won’t confirm those stories. “We’re not going to go into specifics about what she may or may not have said or not said…”

Previous statements from neighbors indicate that the neighbors were the first ones approached by Shannon’s mother. She asked if they had seen any vehicles pull into their drive way. The neighbors stated no and asked why she was asking. She rather nonchalantly stated “because my baby’s gone”. The neighbors state that while the father was terribly upset, the mother showed no emotion over the situation.

The latest news report includes statements from Shannon’s great aunt.

I think if Tina did something then she was definitely not in her right mind when she did it. I really can’t say that I think or don’t think that she’s capable of it…Not the father, I wouldn’t think the father, no, not at all. He’s too heartbroken and distraught. I wouldn’t know what to say about the mom but not the father.”

She went on to say she was not sure if the mother would hurt Shannon. Previous reports had stated the mother, Christina Mercer, had uncharacteristically taken Shannon for a walk at a rather late time in the evening the night before the baby came up missing. Rumors have been going around that the mother confessed to the police she had killed Shannon and buried her body in the nearby woods. The police have neither confirmed nor denied the veracity of the rumors.

I seen the other article previously posted about this and at the time couldn’t even bring myself to comment on it. All these cases of all these children missing and being murdered is so heartbreaking that it just reduces me to tears. For the life of me I’ll never understand it. :_(

» Danna said: { Nov 4, 2009 - 04:11:32 }

I dont get it either Brenda. Where are we going wrong as parents or as a society that parents keep a closer eye on their cell phone than their kids and can dispose of a child as if they were a paper plate or a razor? There are so many alternatives to this available….why does someone make this choice? It baffles me.

» Valhall said: { Nov 4, 2009 - 04:11:42 }

Hi Brenda and Danna,

I don’t understand either. I hope all of us never understand. There’s simply no reason for ever harming a child. There is a Native American saying (I can’t remember what tribe at this moment) that expresses a guiding principle and it equates to “no harm to the children”. Simply put, no matter what issue you are acting or choosing on, your action or choice can not cause any harm to the children. Why is this principle not inherent in our society? We see men who have lost their jobs and are about to lose their home and their answer is to kill their entire families…I don’t understand.

What’s hard to understand is getting so mad at your child to want to kill him or her.There is so much help out there if you need it and also if you have family.There is no excuse in the world for killing your child if indeed this woman has done this. Ever since Caylee was murdered by her own mother it seems as if there are more and more children in the newspaper everyday who are killed by their own parent or some freaking low life pedophile. Something needs to be done,we our to soft on child murderers and child molesters.

Pat,

Welcome, and no problem.

» Valhall said: { Nov 4, 2009 - 12:11:31 }

get…

My sentiments exactly. I cannot understand harming a child. As a society, I think we need to change the way we react to parents who step forward and say they are not ready or are incapable of being a parent so that we can assist in preventing some of these tragedies.

» Pat said: { Nov 4, 2009 - 12:11:24 }

Valhall, Thank you this is a wonderful site and I do appreciate the help on the Petition. So many people do not want to get involved. But if we do not get involved this insanity will never stop. This can not continue in our society it has to stop. Please feel free to email this petition to friends, family or post the link anywhere you think it will help.
Thank you, Pat

Maybe this is the key to where the baby is.

For the very life of me, I’ll never understand the WHY this happening to so many children.

So many people wanting children, that try, cry and pray to have their own child, would move heaven and earth and spend their last penny for one more attempt to have a baby.
So many that open their homes to foster children, to share their love and homes with them, as if they were born of them.

There are so many avenues that parents can take and are at their disposal for help, just for the asking.
What happens that one day, they decide this isn’t “fun” anymore, that the child is to much trouble?
That maybe the welfare check that prompted them to keep the child really isn’t enough after all, or, worth the reporting and being accountable to someone for that check and the childs well-being?

I don’t know ~ It makes for another sad day when you turn on your tv or the computer, and this is what we see.

So many innocent children, guilty of not one thing, being tossed away.

I do not believe there is anything that can happen today that will be able to touch what an awesome awesome day this is. I’m going to smile often through-out this day thinking of that precious little girl’s face as she was held in the secure arms of the officers and investigators who found her.

What a great baby! Listening to her coo in the news conference was like music to my ears! It was impossible to watch that without bawling like a BABY and yet the baby was the only one that wasn’t crying. LOL. What a wonderful thing to wake up to after so much bad news lately. Grin

After I read the PDF file on the parents from protective services, I did not think the child should have been left in that house. Continued use of drugs is not the place to raise a child. Why do they give them so many chances to get clean before something is done. My personal feeling is if they are using drugs remove that child. They kept falling off the wagon on testing to be clean.

» Skyline Pigeon said: { Nov 5, 2009 - 11:11:01 }

I’m watching a recap of the news conferance = yes, it it a miracle that the baby was found.
They are saying that the mother met the “babysitter” at the mailbox and she handed her off.
Not sure what the reasons are….

But, in the end, a Glorious Day, and hopefully, now, this tiny one will be placed in a foster home where she will be cared for properly, and that the parents have their parental rights terminated.
No more second chances.

I know that it is always Social Services priority to return children to their family, and, I agree to a degree.
However, having been in the system and familiar with fostercare, sometimes, it is NOT in the best interest of the child, period.

We can only pray, that with all of the cut backs and layoffs everywhere around us, that this tiny baby does not slip the cracks.
She has been saved this time ~ I hope and pray that there is not “next time”.

» Valhall said: { Nov 5, 2009 - 12:11:33 }

I so agree with you, Sky. Shannon needs a good family who will love and care for her for the rest of her second chance at life.

» Pat said: { Nov 5, 2009 - 12:11:22 }

Shannon was placed in protective custody.

I know this is off topic but the Iowa vs. Kehoe GUILTY verdict came in today too! She’s getting LWOP! It’s too bad we don’t have the DP here for cases like this but at least she didn’t succeed in her attempts to get off by claiming insanity. Wonderful news all around today! Grin

Susan Baker spent 80 days of a 10 year sentence, that is a outrage. Where is the justice system, are they asleep on the bench, you break the arms of a child and bruise it and get 80 days, this really ticks me off with the justice system.

» Pat said: { Nov 5, 2009 - 04:11:01 }

Brenda, I watched that case on court TV, yes she will never harm another child. Horry for the Justice systemm there.

Hi Mary Beth,

Thank you for your kind words. I probably won’t speak publicly too much about myself. I don’t view myself as any more intelligent than any one else. I just have a knack for being an archivist. That’s what I am…an archivist. And I have a knack for writing in the passive voice – which means I can be pretty good at writing technical papers. lmao

I haven’t yet commented on Shannon because this one hit a bit too close to home, for me. I was on the phone with my brother, who lives in North Florida when the story first broke, so he was first to tell me close to an hour or so before it made the news down here. He lives just outside of Chipley, where just a few years ago his five year old little boy was struck by a car and killed, while visiting his mother. Chipley itself, then, is a sensitive spot, and especially for him; so we struggled for a little while as he considered going over and joining in a search for Shannon, as he feels most strongly about such things as missing, exploited and abused kids. But, he hadn’t been back to Chipley since his own little boy’s death, so it was a struggle; though eventually he did decide to go meet up with some friends to see what they could do. The next I heard from him, he was hysterically crying, “Willow, they found her! She’s alright!” But of course, they were tears of joy. And all I can say to that is, Thank God.

Rest in peace, John-John.
We miss you. We love you.
Auntie Willow
